South Korean President's 30-year prison sentence

Prosecutors have demanded a 30-year prison term for former South Korean President Park Gwyn Hai on charges of bribery, abuse of power and other crimes in a landmark corruption case marked by the downfall of the country's first female leader and a conservative figure.

Park did not attend the court hearing, in which the prosecution also demanded a fine of 118.5 billion won ($ 110 million). Prosecutors said they showed no remorse for "disrupting constitutional order and damaging public confidence in state power."

Seoul's central court is expected to set a date later in the day to announce the verdict and sentence if convicted.

"The strict punishment by the court should send a message to the public and politicians that this tragic history should not be repeated," the report quoted prosecutor Han Dong-hoon as telling the court.

If the court finds it guilty, Park will be the third South Korean president convicted of crimes. The other two former army generals were involved in a coup in 1979 and a massacre of civilians in 1980.

Park has boycotted hearings in the Seoul Central District Court since October to protest the court's decision to extend its detention for another six months. Her lawyers then withdrew from the case collectively, and there were reports that she had refused to meet lawyers appointed by the state to defend her since then in court.

Park will be required to attend court hearings, and the court can issue another arrest warrant if it fails to appear. If convicted, her defense team is expected to file a motion for appeal, because Park has always denied any wrongdoing
